What is your pelvic floor, anyway and what the heck does it do? The pelvic floor is a sling of muscles that is the bottom of your pelvis from your pelvis to your tailbone and it’s responsible for keeping your organs in. Your quality of life, being able to function in a healthy way, being able to hold your urine and your stool, being able to enjoy sex, stand upright and have healthy core strength; all of these things are controlled by your pelvic floor.
For example, incontinence (peeing your pants) when laughing (or coughing, straining, or jumping on the trampoline) might be very common, but it is not normal. Let’s stop propagating the myth that incontinence with laughing or coughing is a-ok after having kids. Let’s work as a society on normalizing functioning pelvic floor health as women and mommas! A pelvic floor shouldn’t be leaking or retaining urine if it is functioning well! Pelvic Floor PT can help to improve this and improve your quality of life.
The bottom line is that if you have a pelvic floor (hint, you DO have a pelvic floor) you should be seeing a Pelvic Floor PT for evaluation to make sure that you are optimizing your pelvic floor health.
