You’re listening to Episode 030 of Fulfilled – The Podcast. Today we are chatting with Lara Francisco, Physician Assistant turned business owner and now Chief Innovative Officer of Medelita. Medelita makes high-end performance medical apparel and has become the industry leader for women and men’s lab coats, scrubs and scrub jackets. Lara is a wife, momma and Emergency Medicine PA-C who saw a need in the market for a lab coat that was fitted for the female form and a level of quality and style that wasn’t available.
It all started when Lara went to the store to pickup her student lab coat and was, quite frankly, appalled at the male-only styles of lab coat. She felt the quality of the fabric, the cheap stitching, the sizing and that the lab coats were in no way flattering or meant for women. She wanted something that was flattering, useful, flattered the female shape and was functional for working in medicine in a fast-paced ER situation.
Lara shares a transparent look into the process of founding her company, the trial and error of testing new designs, checking fabrics, testing and innovating over and over again to create a quality product for Medelita’s customers!
We talk about the challenges of working motherhood. Lara shares how they’ve dealt with childcare, outsourcing, nannies, au pairs and how the dynamic has shifted with extra kids. Lara has three kiddos – one daughter and then… twins. When she had her twins she had to pivot and adapt her life and work schedule to accommodate for those humans. Lara shares the challenges she’s had and how, honestly, she’s flying by the seat of her pants each day. Bedtime is important, showing up for those kids is important, but outsourcing laundry is also OK!
We touch on the importance of trusting the team around you at work AND at home. Lara offers the advice that you… do not have to do it… you are not the only one who can do these things the “right way”. Your helpers or your spouse can do them. Outsourcing and delegating are essential skills to develop at home and in entrepreneurship!
Lara shares her passion for spreading stories of the diverse and interesting human beings who are wearing Medelita lab coats and scrubs. Medelita has built a platform on Instagram where they are sharing diverse stories of medical, veterinary, science professionals with unique backgrounds and it’s fun to read and absolutely inclusive. It is breaking down barriers and the desire to connect humans in healthcare and science is evident, Medelita_Gram is a GREAT Instagram follow!
