Welcome to Episode 021 of Fulfilled – The Podcast. We are diving into self-care today – how do we fit self-care into our busy schedules as working Moms. How to re-frame self-care to be a necessity, not a luxury and how to implement a sustainable self-care routine that’s going to stick with you, so long as you stick with it. I’ll share how I said Sayonara to Self-Care and Hellllooooo to meeting my Basic Needs on the daily. Let’s get started!
Change your words and change your mindset. Self-care can sound indulgent, like an occasional treat whereas Basic Needs sound… well, necessary! After my conversation with Jenna and Lauren of @fit.and.social I decided to stop calling my self-care routine self-care and redefine it in my mind and in my life. Hereon to be called Basic Needs!
Here’s your reminder that you are worthy of love and care. You are worthy of having your basic needs met and no one else is going to do that for you. You have to take matters into your own hands. You have to be fiercely intentional about meeting your own basic needs! Otherwise it simply won’t happen at all and you’ll be tomorrow where you are today – without a routine that fills out up, overwhelmed and depleted. I’ve been there and it’s not a fun place to be!
If you don’t take care of yourself you cannot take care of others. Let me say it again for the women in the back. If you don’t take care of yourself you cannot take care of the people that you love. You can’t take care of your patients, your parents, your spouse or your kids. You can’t show up as the woman you want to be for your friends, family, employer, team members or patients unless you are first filling up your own cup. As Moms – we tend to royally suck at this!
Ok – now How do we Identify what our Basic Needs are? They are the things that give us energy, make us feel alive, fulfilled, filled up and rejuvenated. Take a look at your calendar and your routines, what are the things, that when done consistently help you to walk the walk and be the woman you want to be? Those things are the foundation of your basic needs!
Here are some examples of basic needs:
– quiet, alone time
– a warm breakfast
– time to do your makeup and put on an outfit that helps you to exude confidence
– exercise
– getting outside into nature
– reading a fiction book
– cooking
Take this opportunity to write down 10 basic needs. 10 things that are vital, crucial and important to you.
Now, let’s talk about how to implement these basic needs and create routines that are sustainable and fit with your life. Start with one.
ONE habit. Decide when you are going to do that habit. Stack it in, on, before, after or around other established habits. It’s called habit stacking and you can tune in to Episode 20 to hear more from my guests Jenna and Lauren of @fit.and.social.
Set yourself up for success – prep the night before lay things out.
Create accountability – tell your friend, your spouse, or your facebook friends what you plan to do and ask them to check in tomorrow to make sure that you are doing it!
Make a promise to yourself – and then keep it!
Give yourself grace – things happen, if they don’t go exactly as planned, give yourself grace! Don’t give up! Come again to fight another day!
You are worthy of care and love! Meeting your own basic needs are crucial to serve as a foundation for you caring for everyone else!
