I'm talking joy every-day, motherhood isn't a drag, killing it at work & being present at home...

You’re listening to Episode 024 of Fulfilled – The Podcast. Today we are chatting with Diana Page, ACNP (Acute Care Nurse Practitioner) who is a Nurse and APP Coach and Mentor. Diana is a Mom to two toddlers and Neurology NP. She’s also a burnout survivor turned wellness educator and nurse mentor. I’m so excited to share our conversation about burnout, mindset, boundaries and self-care with the World!

First of all, what is burnout in healthcare and in motherhood? Burnout is classified by a triad of symptoms, because we all know that in medicine we LOVE a good triad. First, exhaustion. True, profound exhaustion, that deep in your bones tired where you don’t have anything else to give. You are so exhausted you wonder how much longer this can go on. This exhaustion doesn’t respond to your normal methods of a nap or a workout. You continue to feel worn out and worn thin! Then there’s depersonalization, this disconnect from the work you once loved. You may feel apathy and numbness and as though your fire and passion has left the building. Lastly there’s a lack of self-efficacy which is the questioning of why you are here in the first place. Why are you in the job? You may be questioning if you wish to stay in healthcare, at the bedside, in your career or in your particular role. Burnout is characterized by these three things: exhaustion, depersonalization and lack of self-efficacy.

What now? We feel burned out at work and we may feel burned out in motherhood, too! Once we realize that burnout is real and happening in our lives the first thing to do is to set boundaries. Yep, that big ol’ B word. Boundaries. These boundaries can be with work, with people in our lives, or even with ourselves. In order to set effective boundaries we have to do a self-audit; evaluate the situation, identify the issue and write down the desired outcome. In doing so we see clearly the problem, think of solutions or alternatives, and write down the ideal situation in the end. Then comes, what for me is the hardest part, the how. We’ve identified what we need and now we need to have those conversations with the people who can make them happen. Diana shares a framework for these conversations, pitfalls to avoid, and tips to keep it on track when having these conversations about boundaries.

Diana shares her tips on creating energy and sustainable self-care routines, establishing healthy boundaries with technology, and something she likes to call energy vampires. These are people or things that suck the life out of our days and lives. Watch out for energy vampires in your everyday life and at work!

We touch on how to navigate toxic work environments, getting out of the negativity and pushing past the fear in our own head. We highlight the importance of being in relationship with good people and how to foster a foundation of self-love!

Diana openly shares her experience of walking into and out of burnout and how she is mentoring and coaching other Nurses and APPs to heal from burnout. The healthcare system is broken and it’s asking so much of us. Motherhood is a huge responsibility and these things can lend themselves easily to burnout at work and at home. If you are feeling overrun, over scheduled and wrung out, this Episode is for you!
